Thank you very much. I was looking for a comment about the shepherd anointing and found your side. The Lord really minister to me about all those little bugs trying to destroy us. But every time we come to the shepherd He anoint our heads with oil. Love this! It seems like all those lies from the devil have me banging my head just like those sheep but God uses your explanation of the Shepherd and the oil to remind me that I need to be still so He can apply the oil. I knew about the first one, but I had never thought about the other two.
Tks a lot for sharing!!! My wife and I are so blessed reading this together today! God is a good good Father! I have seen this explanation making its rounds on Facebook and I would encourage you to look a little more closely at Psalm The first part of the Psalm talks about our Good Shepherd and us his sheep, but then the imagery changes.
The second part of Psalm 23 is the picture of a luxurious banquet. The table is ready. The food is overflowing and the guests are anointed with oil a custom in those days in fancy parties. I appreciated you wanting to share such a nice sounding sentiment. Have a blessed day! Thank you for chiming in. This my second time reading this article I must admit I did not completely look at this fine work like I should until now.
It was a great commentary on the Psalm 23 verse 5. If possible may you please, do a full commentary on the Psalm 23 and let us know, because, when I am preaching in my local church, it can be useful for me.
Thank you so much for this message! I shared to spread the message of the power of Jesus and how much he loves us! You are commenting using your WordPress. Love to study! Palms This is very powerful. Sometimes we read the scriptures without understanding why some words mean and for years we will overlook it,Now I understand why the Bible says thoug anointed my head with oil.
Has anyone ever heard of shepherds putting hogs oil on the ground, around snake holes to help prevent sheep from getting bit by snakes while grazing? Chuck, that is a biblical reference based in the Psalms.
Not so sure that would actually work, though. Snakes are pretty nimble! Just as our shepherd does a lot of preparation for his sheep; God does a lot of preparation for us in that He knows the plans he has for each of us to prosper and not be harmed. Yes, I read it in a book that was written by a man who had been a shepherd for 30 years in the Middle East. Have you heard of Cripples walking, blind seeing, leprosy drying up in Kenya?
I have the habit of analyzing what I read in the Holy Scriptures, in order to get the spiritual meaning. There is however alot to read and a analyze. Thanks for the spiritual meaning. The article is both instructive and very interesting. Phillip Keller that explains each verse. Spot on with this explanation of why a shepherd applies oil. If another called, the sheep would not follow the strange voice; they would wander instead.
My sheep hear me and know my voice. The shepherd knew each sheep from birth. It is up to the shepherd to defend the flock not only from their natural wanderings, but from prey. He did both with the rod and staff; it was used not only to hook around a sheep and bring them back into the fold, but as a weapon against predators. The tool that disciplined the lamb and brought it back into the fold also fought off predators that would attack and devour the sheep.
A careless shepherd would maintain distance and leave the sheep to their own devices. A shepherd who used the rod on the sheep instilled them with a confidence that the rod would not be spared against if they came under attack. Okay, there is where the flies come in. Anointing was extremely symbolic for a king, and it is often mentioned.
Sheep are dirty and have very little means to swat away insects. Their ears and stubby tails are no match for flies and gag alert sometimes flies would even lay eggs in their moist nostrils of the sheep. To keep the flies from pestering his poor sheep, a shepherd would sometimes put oil across the heads of the sheep, which acted as a bug repellent. Without much of an immune system another lack of defense a minor disease would quickly spread and kill the sheep. While flies were a minor inconvenience compared to attacking wolves, wandering sheep, dangerous terrain, and thieves, a good shepherd still anointed his sheep because he cares about the little inconveniences.
In the times of ancient Israel, sheep were used for sacrifices. This began with the Passover, when a lamb was brought into Israelite homes, slaughtered and eaten, and its blood covered the door posts as a protection.
Each year when the time came to sacrifice a perfect lamb, a family had to bring it into the house. Selenium and vitamin E are essential in sheep diets. Selenium is a trace element which works with vitamin E to prevent and repair cell damage in the body. Selenium and vitamin E both play a role in immune function and are vital for growth, reproduction, and preventing white muscle disease.
The locking up is caused by a rare genetic disorder called myotonia congenita. One explanation is that a natural mutation in a Tennessee goat herd created the gene that causes the stiffness.
Nutritional myodegeneration NMD , also known as white muscle disease, occurs in newborn foals that do not receive enough selenium from their dams. Affected foals can have breakdown of muscle, sometimes including cardiac muscle, and have trouble swallowing, putting them at risk for pneumonia.
