If you do want to read some of the original Shadowhunters books first, Clare recommends doing so in a chronological order starting with The Infernal Devices series, followed by Chain of Gold and its soon-to-be-published sequels, and then finishing with The Mortal Instruments series. Also, Clare has another series that follows characters mentioned in the last few Mortal Instruments books called The Dark Artifices that you should read after finishing the other two series.

In the second book, they don't talk much but Will, slowly figuring that he's falling for her, goes to find an indifference potion for himself so he can't love her, but he cannot attain one. When they find out Jessamine is a traitor, Tessa disguises herself as Jessamine at the Lightwoods' ball. They kiss on the balcony at the party, only to be interrupted by Magnus. After he finds out that there was no curse on him, he tells Tessa that he loves her but she tells him that Jem already proposed to her.
