In the most shocking scene, an Aboriginal hunter who has invisibly cut down a white man is not allowed his presumed reward of an equally invisible escape. He is exposed and blasted into oblivion seconds later. Desperation is the currency of The Proposition. Stanley has gambled more than he could ever have imagined in setting Charlie Burns temporarily free. Although at first we're appalled at Stanley's proposition, as the film progresses, we come to understand the reasoning behind it.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and these are very desperate times. Stanley is, at heart, a good man, trying to do an impossible job in a worse place.
For the Australia of The Proposition is a cruel, lawless land of red dust shimmering in a haze of heat, where grit-laden winds blow harsh across an endless plain and flies buzz incessantly round everything - living or dead. My God, making this film must have been an ordeal.
So hats off, then, to the magnificent cast. Captain Stanley Ray Winstone cuts Charlie a deal. He and Mikey are allowed to go free if they track down and kill their older brother Arthur Danny Huston , a demented outlaw whose crimes include raping and murdering a pregnant woman.
Hurt is wolfishly entertaining as a grotty, silver-tongued fiend who guffaws at the concept of natural selection and ribs Charlie about his Irish ancestry. The scene is an excellent example of script, direction and performances coming together with a rich and beguiling synergy. Hillcoat oscillates between bloodied action chutzpah — including shootouts, robberies, horse riding and Pearce getting speared a symbolic punishment for his early years on Neighbours?
