Eos asked the king of the gods, Zeus , to make Tithonus immortal , but forgot to ask for eternal youth , which resulted in him living forever as a helpless old man.
He yearns for death and begs his lover Eos to take back the boon of immortality. The poem emphasizes on the inevitability of death and of the necessity of accepting it as such. It is often contrasted with another famous poem by Tennyson, Ulysses , which explores the human spirit that refuses to accept death.
