The fifth virtue is an intense yearning for spiritual fulfillment which consists of the actual experience of the presence and reality of God, which is said to fully satisfy all other yearning. Compassion for self: If we do not prioritize caring for ourselves, we find ourselves empty when we try to care for others. Thank you, gymnast extraordinaire Simone Biles, for your courageous example toward changing our culture.
Compassion for our earth: Caring for our earth and doing all we can to alleviate our climate crisis is paramount. Systemic change: Dismantling systems and structures that are causing suffering — such as racism and white supremacy — is critical. Spiritual growth: Growing and challenging ourselves to become better people, strengthening our spiritual connections however we define those to be more mindful, more present, and more compassionate.
Many have a weekly practice mussar of developing them by focusing on one trait each week. The top five moral values are unique to each of us. One person may have difficulty with anger and another with lack of patience. Humility is the most important. Transformation comes from the inside, not by imposing some morality or a code of behavior. Christian life is inspired by the Spirit that produces a transformation in which both soul and body participate.
The first of five values that characterize this inner life of the Spirit would be self-control. This allows us to put flesh and Spirit in the right order. Faith, Hope and Love would complete the five because faithfulness to Christ is our task for the present age and our hope is always set on the Heavenly Kingdom.
Finally, love, not romantic but selfless and sacrificial, abides forever, uniting us with each other and with God. Also critical are truthfulness and trustworthiness, which involve much more than not telling lies; they also embody the willingness to discuss, value, and uphold truth itself. Social justice means that all — regardless of religion, race, creed, class, or gender identity — are treated fairly. An obvious example is the game of chess where it is encouraged for players to be thinking a few moves ahead of their opponents.
Another example in everyday life is where you have a prime suspect in a case who is believed to be breaking the law by using forged money to buy things. To catch him in the act you plan ahead by placing a surveillance camera in a store where he often commits this act. In other situations, like you want to block off easy access to your backyard because of nosy neighbors so you make a fence, thinking a few moves ahead is needed for personal security reasons.
Being Patient Not everyone has the patience to wait things out. Patience is a part of self-control where even though nerves are being tested, there is the understanding of a person that if he or she lets a process go the way it is supposed to go, the end result will be a favorable one. When people show a complete lack of patience with any project in their lives, everything with that project often becomes disastrous.
One example is someone taking an important test to get certification for a profession. If the test is untimed, that person should be patient enough to answer most questions correctly. An example of this is when someone takes you out to lunch and buys a meal for you. After this lunch, you remember this act of kindness and you want to return the favor to that other person. Aspiring to Learn Challenging yourself is a motivational tool that can be rewarding if you follow through with the challenge.
You may not have any knowledge in certain areas but you have the desire to learn more about something that interests you.
For example, you know very little about automobile mechanics but you want to learn more about fixing cars. You watch a video about a mechanic who has fixed cars for years and listen to his compelling story. That story inspires you to start learning, so you pick up books about mechanics and study online. Your aspiration to learn new things can sometimes motivate others to learn new things themselves. Morality must be upheld in order for a person to have a strong value system.
Without any moral values a society of people, or an entire country, will lead itself to a state of anarchy, where lawlessness and chaos will reign supreme. Leave space to add more examples. Next encourage each person commit to one value they want to focus on for the week.
Check in daily with each other to see if there was an opportunity to act on that value. What happened? How did it feel? What did you learn? Asking your kids these questions sends the message that you care about these values. When this happens, help them find a way to make amends. Ask questions to guide your kids in figuring out what they would like to do to make things better. Doing the Good Your kids will have daily opportunities to choose to act on their values. On the other hand, a businessperson might be okay with paying bribes as long as his work is completed on priority and he is able to make profits.
Values could be said to be inherent beliefs that inspire our behaviors and actions. They indicate the kind of person we are and the kind of person we wish to become. They shape our view of the world. Our values define things that we consider to be good, desirable, or important. We act as per our values. Various types of values such as personal values guide our perception of right and wrong. Apart from personal values, you also have cultural and social values such as gender and race equality.
Then, there are the professional values which define our work ethics. Values such as loyalty, courage, and honesty often carry currency in a professional environment.
This set of values typically becomes embedded in our behavior through a long process of observation, education, conditioning, and social guidelines. Usually, these are universal in nature and may not vary much in different parts of the world. For instance, no matter which community, religion, or region you belong to, moral values such as truthfulness, loyalty, courage, faith, and honesty will be equally respected almost everywhere.
